What is StudioCDN?

StudioCDN is an application which enables you to send any file to anyone with an email address, in a completely secure way.  All audio files are watermarked for security reasons.

You can invite anyone to send you files using StudioCDN Inbox.

It has been designed to be as fast, simple and easy to use as possible.  It is a more secure alternative to the likes of YouSendIt / Hightail, Dropbox, WeTransfer, SendSpace, Gdrive and Sky Drive; which you should not be using for UMG business.

What file types can I send?

You can send any type of file; audio, video, documents  etc… Currently only 16 bit audio files will be watermarked.  (Support for watermarking of 24bit Audio and Video files will arrive later). Production users have the option to send audio files without watermarking.

Please note that you can mix and match files types within a package, each file is processed individually.

Is there a file size limit?

You send packages of any size to any number of recipients.  The only limitation is network bandwidth and the time it takes.  However there is an individual file size limit of 50GB, which supports Blu-Ray images.  INbox currently has a limit of 5GB, although this will rise in the future.

How do I get an account (UMG user)?

All UMG staff can automatically use the system using the same account they use to login to their computer and access their email.  Like email, this also means they need to be connected by VPN when working outside the office.

How do I get an account (External user)?

If you are an external user wishing to send to a UMG user using their StudioCDN Inbox you will need a Yahoo or Gmail account.  This is so that we can identity you correctly both to your recipient, and for tracking purposes.  If you stay logged in to your Yahoo or Gmail account you will not need to keep putting in your username and password, this information will automatically pass through your browser for your convenience.

Can recipients forward files I send/ what is node locking?

The web page you open to access the files sent to you automatically locks to the first machine it is opened on (including smartphones and tablets).  Recipients can then open the page as many times as they like on the original device for up to 5 days.  However if they forward the original email to a new user (or a new device), the page will be locked and you will not be able to access the files.  This is for security purposes.

Please note - if the original sender does not open the link, they can forward on the email notification and another anonymous user can then open and lock it.  It is strongly advised not to do this, as it means the wrong persons information will be included in any watermarking and tracking information.

However, please read the next question:-

Recipient Forwarding

A forthcoming feature will be the ability for recipients to forward packages on to new recipients of their own, if the original sender has granted this permission.  The original sender will be able to revoke this permission at any time.  A forwarded package will keep the same security as the original package, is if it was sent as stream only with downloads forbidden it will always have these properties.

This feature will allow correct watermarking and tracking of files as they are distributed.

How long are the files available for?

The files are currently available for 5 days to download.  We expect to offer an option to allow users to select different times soon.  Files are stored in the system for far longer.  This is to enable file matching.

What is file matching / How do files upload instantly?

All files sent are stored in the system for many months.  If you go to send the same file again, from anywhere in the world, the file will match to the one already available and will not upload again.  This matching is done using sophisticated hashing checks to ensure files are identical.

When you download files from StudioCDN which are watermarked, the system records the hash information.  If you send this watermarked file to someone else it will match back to the original file first uploaded.  This ensures that all watermarks are first generation (for best sound quality) and improves the performance of the system.

Watermarking Questions

StudioCDN uses MSI MarkAny audio watermarking.

This is the same system used by eFolio, ASPEN, InGrooves, DigiPlug, the CD burning stations in North America and many bureau like MediaDisc in London.

The MarkAny system will successfully re-watermark a file previously watermarked by MarkAny.  You do not need to worry if the file you are sending is already watermarked.  If the file was originally watermarked by StudioCDN, it will match back to the originally uploaded version, guaranteeing your recipients have a first generation watermark for the highest audio quality.

The MarkAny system does not clash with the Watermarking used by PlayMPE.  If you send a file through both systems both watermarks are detectable.

Currently StudioCDN watermarks 16bit audio only.  We plan to support 24bit audio in the coming months.

Watermarking can be disabled by selecting the Do Not Watermark option in the client.  This is available to Production users who are in the correct group, and appears in the standard client after a quick authentication test.  If you wish to be added to this group you will need to show the business requirement for you to access this feature with approval from your management.

StudioCDN does not currently watermark video, although it is planned to offer this in the future.

Where is the documentation?

There are 2 types of documentation available:-

1. Video Documentation

2. User Guide (for Internal UMG users only)
